I decided to write this blog because it has been statistically proven that a good percentage of dogs wind up in a kennel because of housebreaking issues. In my personal opinion, anyone that would kill a dog because he pees in the house is worthless! This is exactly what happens when your once beloved FIDO can’t seem to correct his mistakes and is dropped at the pound or animal shelter.

Would we return a child because of the same problem?

In a previous blog I stated that “People need to be more responsible when acquiring pets”. Welcoming
a pet is like welcoming a newborn into your family. Parents are ready for any situation that should arise or at least are on their toes and prepared to deal with unplanned issues. According to a report done by
Eleanor Brecher of the Miami Herald, two-thirds of the 37,000 dogs and cats that end up at Miami-Dade County’s animal shelter die there. That is 24,420 dogs and cats each and every year.

Please read the story: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/17/1583805/miami-dade-animal-welfare-partnership.html#ixzz1BLLKUUDv

While there are many ways to train a dog to go outside, none is fool proof. House breaking is tedious, time consuming and requires much patience.
Puppies need to relieve themselves approximately six times a day and should be taken outside after every meal. A full stomach puts pressure on the colon and bladder; puppies are not able to control the bladder until about twelve weeks of age.

ROUTINE
Most important! Everyday around the same time your puppy needs to be taken outside to play or walk. This rhetorical in and out is associating him with when he should do his business and where. You can also confine him to a small area of the house to ensure he doesn’t soil carpets or expensive tapestries. Having said that, it is much harder to house break a puppy if he smells his own urine. That is like a green light to get busy. Dogs that go on pack walks, visits to the dog park and many other activities are less likely to soil the home out of anxiety.

PRAISE & DISCIPLINE
Just as important as Routine! Praise them when they go outside and discipline them when they have an accident in the house. When your puppy sees that you are happy, they are happy and much more eager and reassured to do their business. When scolded because of mischief, they work harder to get back in their owner’s good grace. Simple as that!

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PUPPY
Watch for signs like turning in circles, squatting, urine marks or little nuggets during the day and annotate times. These simple things can help lead to building a schedule and keep your pooch in your good graces.

Dogs want to please; the trick is to make them understand what it is you want from them.

Dogs do not think the way humans do. When you are unhappy with your dog, it assumes that whatever it is doing at the exact moment you show disapproval – is the thing that is upsetting you. For example:

Your puppy relieves himself on your floor and you show your disapproval five minutes after he has committed the act, the puppy will think that the mess on the floor is bad. He will not relate to the fact that it was the act of relieving himself on your floor that you disapprove of. The dog will eliminate, see the mess and get worried; you are now going to be unhappy. This is the reason so many dogs will relieve themselves in inappropriate places and look really guilty about it, yet they continue to do it. Dogs want to please!

I would implore every person and family to fully understand what owning a DOMESTIC means. I am personally of the opinion that raising a child and owning a puppy are one in the same. Your puppy deserves just as much love as a daughter or son.
